<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Walk into any dispensary or CBD shop and you will see these three words on packaging, usually with no explanation attached. They are not marketing language. They describe something specific and measurable about what is inside the bottle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Here is what each one actually means, how they are made, and how to tell them apart on a label.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The short version</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All three terms describe how much of the plant made it into the final product. The cannabis plant contains hundreds of compounds. What separates full spectrum from broad spectrum from isolate is simply how many of those compounds survived processing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Full spectrum</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A full spectrum extract retains the complete range of compounds naturally present in the source plant. That means the major cannabinoids, the minor ones such as CBG, CBN, CBC and THCV, plus the plant&#8217;s terpenes, flavonoids and natural waxes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It also means THC is present. In a hemp derived full spectrum product, THC sits at trace levels, at or below 0.3 percent by dry weight, which is the federal threshold that separates hemp from marijuana. In a marijuana derived full spectrum product sold at a licensed dispensary, THC can be present at far higher levels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Full spectrum extracts are typically darker and have a stronger plant aroma, because everything that gives cannabis its smell is still in there.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Broad spectrum</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Broad spectrum keeps most of what full spectrum has, minus the THC. The THC is stripped out to non detectable levels, usually through chromatography, leaving the minor cannabinoids and terpenes behind.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a second way to make it. Some manufacturers start with pure isolate and build back up, adding selected terpenes and minor cannabinoids to create a broad spectrum profile. The label will not always tell you which method was used, though a certificate of analysis showing an unusually clean, rounded profile is often a clue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Isolate</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Isolate is a single cannabinoid, purified and separated from everything else. CBD isolate is the most common, typically 98 to 99 percent pure, and appears as a white crystalline powder with no smell and no taste.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is produced through distillation and crystallisation, stripping away all other cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and plant material until only the target compound remains.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because isolate has no flavour of its own, it is the base of choice for products where taste matters, such as beverages and certain edibles.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How they are made</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The starting point for all three is the same. Plant material goes through an extraction process, most commonly supercritical carbon dioxide, ethanol, or hydrocarbon solvents such as butane. What comes out is a crude oil containing everything the solvent pulled from the plant.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stop there, refine lightly, and you have full spectrum. Run it through chromatography to remove the THC and you have broad spectrum. Push it through <a href="https://www.scribd.com/presentation/895467717/Distillation-and-Crystallization">distillation and crystallisation</a> until a single compound remains and you have isolate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each additional step removes material, which is why isolate typically costs more per unit of the target cannabinoid than crude full spectrum oil.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The entourage effect, described honestly</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You will see this term used constantly, usually to argue that full spectrum is superior. It deserves a careful description.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entourage effect is a hypothesis, put forward by pharmacologist Ethan Russo in a 2011 paper in the British Journal of Pharmacology. It proposes that cannabinoids and terpenes may interact with one another in ways that differ from how each behaves in isolation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Note the framing. Russo&#8217;s own title describes the synergy as potential, and the paper repeatedly calls for controlled experiments to test it. Fifteen years on, the evidence remains unsettled. A 2025 pharmacokinetic study found no evidence that full spectrum products were absorbed differently from isolates, concluding that if an entourage effect exists it would have to operate at the receptor level rather than through absorption.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So the accurate position is this. The hypothesis is interesting, it is taken seriously by researchers, and it has not been established. Anyone telling you definitively that one spectrum type performs better than another is going beyond what the science currently supports.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hemp derived versus marijuana derived</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This distinction matters more than the spectrum question for anyone buying in Massachusetts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hemp derived CBD comes from plants testing at or below 0.3 percent delta 9 THC. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act, which is why you can buy hemp CBD in a general retail shop.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Marijuana derived products come from plants above that threshold and can only be sold through state licensed dispensaries. In Massachusetts that means testing by a licensed independent laboratory, tracking through the state Metrc system, and labelling that meets Commission requirements down to the font size.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The regulatory gap between the two is wide. A hemp CBD product from a petrol station forecourt has not been through any of that.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which one you actually encounter</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Product format tends to decide the spectrum type more than anything else.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Flower is full spectrum by definition. Nothing has been extracted or removed, so every compound the plant produced is still present in whatever ratio it grew in.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vape cartridges usually contain distillate, which sits closer to the isolate end, though many are <a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/reformulate">reformulated</a> with terpenes added back, producing something nearer broad spectrum in composition.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Edibles vary widely. Products where flavour is the priority tend to use isolate, because it contributes nothing to the taste. Products marketed on the character of a particular cultivar are more likely to use a full spectrum extract.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tinctures and topicals appear in all three forms, and this is the category where reading the label makes the most difference, because the same bottle size can contain very different things.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reading it on the label</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The packaging will usually state the spectrum type outright. If it does not, the certificate of analysis will tell you. Look at the cannabinoid panel. A long list with multiple compounds detected points to full spectrum. A similar list with THC showing as non detect points to broad spectrum. A single line with one compound at 99 percent is isolate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Massachusetts dispensaries carry products across all three categories. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whichever type you are looking at, the useful habit is the same. Read the panel rather than the front of the box.</p>
